So thankful you and your home fared alright. What a gift to have neighbors to rely on in those earliest moments and days, especially. Thanks for sharing!!!

Thank you for sharing your experience. As a Houstonian I've learned a few things about preparing for a hurricane and also winter storms that might be too much for our electrical grid to handle. I'll just add a couple of things to your list. When we know a storm is coming we fill the bathtub with water. Also, if possible try to have all of your dishes washed and enough clothes and linens clean for several days. If you have a gas stove It's helpful to have long matches to light it manually if needed. On a related note, make sure to have carbon monoxide detectors in enclosed spaces!

Great additions! If we had known the storm would have taken our water supply, we would have definitely filled up the tub and washed everything! That aspect was particularly stressful.

Super helpful, thank you. Looks like portable containers to refill with trucked-in water might be something else to add to the kit list. Im glad you all are OK, even though nothing is OK.

Thank you for stating it that way. It’s exactly how I feel. And yes, portable containers really would’ve helped. We got some later, but I wish I had those stacking ones at the beginning.

Melanie, I was thinking about you the past week and wondering if you were okay. So glad you're survived this horrific event. We live in Asheville now, and we just can't believe a hurricane so far inland in the mountains. Luckily our camper truck was filled with enough water to carry us through until water arrived and we used it as our kitchen, and we live right next to a stream to carry water of buckets to flush toilets. Yesterday, water finally came on and I will never take for granted running water EVER. Be safe and thanks for the helpful post.
