How to Attract Wildlife to Your Yard, Garden or even Balcony!
You don't need a large space to attract wildlife, pollinators and creatures to your outdoor areas
Recently I wrote a little bit about why we would should encourage wildlife to our outdoor areas and how to get over your fears of wildlife.
But how exactly do we attract wildlife to our outdoor spaces? And how do we do that if our backyard space is limited?
First and foremost, learn a little bit about the wildlife in your area.
Your specific area may have creatures with very specific needs that have evolved to fit in your environment and climate. For example, in my area we have blue lightning bugs. Or as some folks call them, ghost fireflies.
iPhones aren’t great in low light, but the way my meadow lights up with fireflies now is amazing.
Lightning bugs require rotten logs and leaf litter for their eggs to hatch and larvae to develop. They also need water and prefer moist areas. Since I put in my “meadow” with a water feature in the center, I’ve seen more lightning bugs than I’ve ever before. I’ve yet to see the blue ghost fireflies, but my neighbor swears she’s seen them. Fingers crossed that I’ll get to see them one day!
Once we learn about the wildlife in our area and the wildlife we specifically want to attract, we can focus on the things all wildlife need:
